ON the eve of the massive trans-Atlantic celebration of physical music that is Record Store Day, The Music Brewery has compiled a list detailing the must buy records for this Saturday 18th April.
Record Store Day is a fantastic movement which aims to bring hoards of customers back to the high street for lovely physical forms of music, bot CD and vinyl. It has been an active ‘music holiday’ since 2007, adopted both in the US and the UK.
In true High Fidelity style (fans of the Nick Hornby book and film starring John Cusack will understand our reference) we have created a top 5 must have records for Record Store Day.
It features re-releases of classic albums, including extended editions and special formats, expanded editions of timeless LPs and new stuff from the big names and the undiscovered.
1. Demob Happy – Young and Numb EP
The Brighton/Newcastle four-piece, whose rise we recently documented through a series of hazy photos, are set to release the Young and Numb EP. There will be 500 copies available on 10″ black vinyl at the following stores.Title track ‘Young and Numb’ is brilliantly broody, fuzzy with a measured indie sensibility. Another highlight from the EP is the frenetic ‘Fizz’ which screams a hazy, drunken stumble through a flat party.
2. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – ‘In The Heat Of The Moment (Remixes)’ 12″ Vinyl
Indie God Noel Gallagher is set to release 2,000 copies of a two track 12″ vinyl featuring remixes of his latest big hit ‘In The Heat Of The Moment’. Taken from his band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Bird’s, number one album Chasing Yesterday the track has been mixed by both Andrew Weatherall and Toydrum.
3. Ian Dury – New Boots And Panties!!! Expanded Edition
Legendary new wave eccentric Ian Dury is set to posthumously re-release his 1977 breakthrough album New Boots And Panties!!! The Essex born singer, who released the album with his band The Blockheads, is set to have his legendary album resurrected by Demon Records as an ‘Expanded Edition’.
1,500 copies will be available with one LP entitled New Boots on 12″ orange vinyl, and another 12″ green vinyl entitled Different Boots (which we can only assume is the expanded edition).
4. Father John Misty – I Loved You, Honeybee 7″ Coloured Vinyl
I have to say I’m not sure how this one is going to work, but I’m sure if J. Tillman is releasing 500 copies it’s all above board. A rework entitled ‘I Loved You, Honeybee’ of the title track from Father John Misty’s 2015 album I Love You, Honeybear is set to be released on 7″ clear red heart-shaped vinyl by Bella Union. Now correct me if I’m wrong but don’t records have to be circular to revolve?
It looks awesome and I’m sure it’ll sound just as good, a must have!
5. Ryan Adams – ‘Come Pick Me Up’ 7″ Vinyl
Americana singer-songwriter Ryan Adams celebrates a now 15 year solo career, after the disbandment of Whiskeytown, by releasing a track from his first album all those years ago. A 7″ vinyl alternate take of single ‘Come Pick Me Up’ taken from his magnificent debut Heartbreaker (2000) will be released on UMC. 1,000 copies are available and the B-side is the previously unreleased ‘Ropes Get Tight’.
Please get yourself down to your local record store and get in touch with music again.
