Just as others threaten to steal the show and push Kendrick and his upcoming album into the shadows, KDot drops some absolute fire with his new single ‘The Blacker The Berry’ produced by Boi-1da.
I’ve seen a few people review ‘The Blacker The Berry’ and some of those people are claiming “a return to form for Kendrick Lamar”, but seriously that’s some serious bullshit. When has Kendrick not been killing it?
Anyway ‘The Blacker The Berry’ is complete fire, Kendrick spitting some serious bars and confronting some very serious social issues. Unlike ‘i’ the first single from the highly anticipated follow up to GKMC, ‘The Blacker The Berry’ is a far angrier and darker trajectory for Kendrick, challenging and criticizing the treatment of African Americans while referencing the events that led to the recent unrest in Ferguson.
However this is not just a one-sided argument from Kendrick, he also analyses what he perceives as hypocrisy within the African American community, highlighted perfectly by the last lines “So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street? / When gang banging make me kill a n*gga blacker than me? / Hypocrite!”. Powerful words from Kendrick Lamar, who seems to be more and more revolutionary with each release.
This really is one of those songs you simply cannot miss, it could potentially be a game changer not just in music but also in American society. So give it a listen and let us know what you think about it.
