A dance-synth trio hailing from London, Years And Years, may just be the next big thing to blow up our radios in 2015. The group were relatively unknown in the mainstream music scene until they were crowned this years BBC Radio One Sound Of 2015 , an accolade that has previously been given to Adele, Jessie J and 50 Cent amongst other massive pop stars. It seems safe to say big things are headed their way. But who are Years And Years?
The group is comprised of bassist Mikey Goldsworthy, Emre Turkmen on keys and vocalist Olly Alexander. The band formed initially in 2010, with Mikey and Emre meeting online. After Mikey heard Olly singing in the shower, he invited him into the band and Years And Years was born. They mention both Diplo and ’90s R’n’B as some of their main influences, and this is clearly reflected in their sound. Ethereal synth and electronic backdrop music is spearheaded by Olly Alexander’s soulful and unique vocals to create super catchy, toe tapping tunes to dance to.
The group were initially signed to French label Kitsuné Records, but in 2014 they signed with major record label Polydor. With their single ‘Desire’ reaching no. 22 in the UK singles chart, the group seem to be following all the right steps to go from indie level success to mainstream explosion.
It’s not just the Radio One crowd who think this band are headed for great things – iTunes have also named them as one of their New Artists For 2015.
The group toured extensively last year, playing at festivals such as Bestival, The Great Escape and Latitude. The group have also supported Clean Bandit and Sam Smith on their respective tour dates.
Its safe to say, in the wake of their Sound Of 2015 win, we can expect huge things from this three-piece! You can catch Years And Years as they headline Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London, on 12th June.
