Madonna: A Marketing Genius?

Ever the diplomat, to bring in the new year, Madonna yesterday spewed her bile promotional material all over social media. In a ropey attempt to generate interest and sales for her forthcoming album Rebel Heart, the pop legend put up photos of Bob Marley, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. superimposed with wire over their face to mirror the album artwork. It has since caused uproar in the media, but does this make Madonna a total idiot or a marketing genius?

Well put it this way, if Madonna and her team hadn’t carried out the stunt I wouldn’t be writing this article.

mlk

Undoubtedly the photos are ludicrous and Madonna’s response to the criticism is weak at best. The iconic singer released a statement on her Facebook account saying:

“I’m sorry. I’m not comparing myself to anyone. I’m admiring and acknowledging their Rebel Hearts.”

To even suggest that she is too a ‘rebel heart’ like these three men who have suffered and achieved incredible things for their people and humanity in general is just plain stupid. To exploit these figures and attach what they achieved to her out of touch music just to generate sales is truly awful…yet so, so clever.

Yes, what she has done is undoubtedly in bad taste and something many don’t agree with and her response is far from the truth but people are talking about Madonna again.

She hasn’t been relevant since her last big single – the unforgettable ‘Hung Up’ from Confessions On A Dance Floor (2005). The horrifically sexual video of a then 47 year old gyrating in Lycra will be forever etched in my memory, it looks like another stunt from Madonna will have a similar effect.

What do you think is Madonna a marketing genius or simply a fool hung up on returning to her former glory?
