A Bit Of An Intro To Woodkid: Singer, Director and All Round Top Talent

Recently I downloaded a mammoth chilled out playlist, a stupidly large playlist nearly 1200 songs, which has obviously made it a bit tricky to navigate and actually find tunes that I like. But the other day while driving up north I decided to tackle some of it and just let it all play! I wasn’t disappointed, while on a particularly long stretch of the M1 the chilled acoustic vibes of Woodkid were introduced to my ears.

Woodkid aka Yoann Lemoine is a music video director, graphic designer, singer-songwriter hailing from Lyon, France. It’s safe to say he has a lot going for him! You may not recognise the name but you will recognise some of his directing work, with big music videos such as Katy Perry “Teenage Dream”, Lana Del Ray “Born To Die”, Drake “Take Care feat. Rihanna”, the lists goes on but he has made some truly brilliant videos.

The background in directing definitely translates in his music as Woodkid. An unbelievably distinctive voice that is very soft yet beautifully haunting, you instantly feel at ease and relaxed while listening to his masterfully written songs. The production is also excellent and feels epic, combined with his story-telling lyricism, It makes me feel like I am listening to a film, there is that much of a cinematic feel to his music that makes you experience a variety emotions throughout his songs. My personal highlights from him are “Iron”, an epic tune with royal sounding trumpets and thumping anthem-like drums that many people may recognise from Assassin’s Creed adverts. Secondly “Brooklyn” the song that got me into Woodkid, is a very chilled love song to the area of New York, Brooklyn, a great combination of acoustic guitar followed piano and finally the trumpet is introduced to create a stunning melody that really compliments the classic Woodkid vocals.

I really recommend checking him out now especially if you’re looking for something a bit different but chilled out!
